<p style="text-align: left;">&quot;I've always been drawn to spaces where architecture and landscape feel inseparable,&quot; says Kelly Wearstler. &quot;I've explored contemporary interpretations of the formal garden, where structure becomes a framework for nature rather than a counterpoint to it.” Historic courtyards, conservatories with iron and glass ceilings, and garden pavilions where architecture and composition don't resist nature so much as reach toward it. With Treillage, Wearstler brought this sensibility to tile.</p>


<p>The geometry of Treillage relies on exactness. The proportion of each line and the way patterns align from tile to tile are what create the illusion of depth and movement across an installation. And yet, every tile is finished by hand, which means the precision is always held alongside something softer. A warmth in the glaze or a subtle variation across the surface of a tile means that no two installations will have exactly the same finished look.</p>
<p>&quot;What excites me about handmade production is that it introduces humanity into something highly structured,&quot; Wearstler says. &quot;You get the rigor of geometry, but also the subtle variation and warmth that only comes from the hand.&quot;</p>
<p>After <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/inspiration/designer-collections/kelly-wearstler.html">nearly a decade of collaboration</a>, Wearstler's intentions for the collection are clear. &quot;Pattern can do far more than decorate a surface,&quot; she says. &quot;It can create rhythm, establish order, and shape atmosphere.&quot; With Treillage, she's done exactly that.</p>


<p><a href="https://www.kellywearstler.com/about-us/about-us/about-us.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wearstler's Los Angeles-based studio</a> spans architecture and interiors, product and furniture design, creative direction, and curation. Treillage is her <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/inspiration/designer-collections/kelly-wearstler.html">ninth collection for Ann Sacks</a>, and her <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/tile/made-by-ann-sacks.html?Designer_Collaboration=Kelly%20Wearstler">sixth in the MADE line</a>, a collection of handmade ceramic and stoneware tile produced exclusively in our Portland, Oregon factory, using techniques refined over four decades. Treillage, her latest, begins somewhere unexpected — with a garden.</p>
<p>The trellis has appeared in formal European gardens, historic conservatories, and the facades of classical buildings for centuries. It is one of architecture's most enduring elements, precise and ordered, yet designed from the beginning to hold something living.</p>
<p>&quot;What I love about a trellis is that it occupies a space between the natural and the constructed,&quot; Wearstler says. &quot;It's highly architectural, deeply ordered, and yet it was designed to support growth. There's also a beautiful illusion at work. A flat surface suddenly suggests depth, shadow, and dimension.&quot;</p>
<p>That illusion became the central idea for the collection. Treillage arrives in <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/ceramic/collections/made-treillage-by-kelly-wearstler/products.html">five formats</a>: Cross, Diagonal Left, Diagonal Right, Grid, and Weave, each designed from the start to work in relationship with the others. Not five tiles that happen to share a palette, but a system. The lines align precisely from tile to tile, which means the patterns can move across a surface, shift in scale, build in complexity, or stay quiet and restrained.</p>
<p>&quot;I think about each tile the way I think about composing a room,&quot; Wearstler says. &quot;Each pattern has its own cadence and personality, but the magic happens when they begin to interact. Together they create a layered dialogue.&quot;</p>
