This innovative surface material is fashioned from naturally occurring pyrite in a random patterning that emphasizes its inherent mineral properties. The carefully composed pyrite tiles are a tightly hand-fitted mosaic that resembles a puzzle-like jigsaw, which expertly undergo careful polishing and antiquing techniques exclusive to ANN SACKS. These methods reveal the reflective, luminescent qualities of the stone and result is a finished look that is a distinctive combination of refined and raw.

The metal itself has a long and storied history; its name comes from the Greek “pyr” for “fire” because early on it was discovered that it sparked when struck by another rock or mineral. The iridescence that occurs when light hits the imbedded minerals inspired shamans and healers to assign magical traits and healing properties to the stone. Native Americans took advantage of its radiant properties and polished large slabs of it until they could be used as mirrors, and its glittering nature duped prospectors, giving the stone its nickname: “Fool’s Gold.”
